What’s Open and Closed on Indigenous Peoples' Day 2024: Columbus Day

Hey there! In any case, on the second Monday in October, we celebrate Indigenous Peoples' Day (also Columbus Day for some). And now, this day that even as recently as a few years ago seemed like just another random Monday off work, is an actual opportunity to honor the contributions and legacy of Indigenous people who were here long before Columbus. Side note: In a narrow proclamation that states many other wrongs happen to Indigenous people at the federal level. only in 2021 did President Biden officially recognize Indigenous People's Day. Some states enjoy this holiday, while others acknowledge it through proclamations. In fact, more than 100 cities have entirely replaced Columbus Day with Indigenous Peoples' Day. Pretty cool, right?

So, many of us love a long weekend but then comes the question – what's happening and what's closed? For those of you who need to run some errands, or are planning your day elsewhere here is how it goes:

Schools and Offices

This is a bit of a mixed bag. Certain students have the day off! On the other hand, some still have classes. As always it's best to check your school district but know that you are in the home stretch and just making do with what is being tossed out on TV! In other words, yes as well for office workers. While many will have the day off, for others it's just another workday. If today is your day off, do what you please! If not, oh well; traffic might be lighter.

Banks

Here’s where it gets tricky. Bank of America, Wells Fargo, and Citibank are all closed in observance of the Federal Reserve bank holiday on Oct. 14 (Monday). Therefore, if you have bank issues then plan according to that. We discovered that Chase Bank and TD Bank would be open. Great news if you are a customer? Third, and of course, you can still use online banking/electronic ATMs when needed.

Mail Services

Got something to mail? Might as well forget about the USPS, they are closed anyway and no mail will be delivered on this day. There is an upside to all this, though: UPS and FedEx are continuing business as usual. Two caveats though: FedEx Express and FedEx Ground Economy. If it is critical, verify their calendar before sending anything out.

Retail Stores

And if you need to go shopping, then good news! Many major retailers like Target and Walmart will be open. Thus you are taken care of whether it is for groceries or just an excuse to indulge by buying something. The best way to check if you have a favorite spot in mind is to look at their hours, and keep an eye out for the small local businesses — they may just be taking a break.

Government Buildings

But you will, for sure, take notice because government establishments — such as the DMV, libraries, and courts/offices thereof–will be shuttered. And if you have plans to renew your licenses, or head over to city hall — then Tuesday is the day.

So, there you have it! So whether you are chilling inside your home or sorting out some scores, this is how Indigenous Peoples' Day 2024 will be. This hopefully saves you at least one-holiday headache. If you have the day off, ENJOY! You might consider taking five minutes to read up on the legacy of Indigenous people in your neighborhood. It is a wonderful way to celebrate the day.
